Kandinsky Paintings



First grade students learned about active and calm lines in art class and created their own active lines paintings while listening to a variety of jazz music. Next, they demonstrated their knowledge of mixing the primary colors to create secondary colors as they painted inside the shapes they created. Students also learned about the Russian abstract artist Wassily Kandinsky during this lesson on lines and color.

Piet Mondrian Paintings

Kindergarten students studied directional lines as well as primary colors as they learned about artist Piet Mondrian in art class.













4th Grade Fieldtrip to High Museum of Art

Barnwell fourth graders attended a fieldtrip to the High Museum of Art to take part in the I See Literacy tour which teaches students about reading art as we read text through a series of strategies such as making visual inferences based on what you see or "read" in the work of art. The fieldtrip was a huge success and was greatly enjoyed by both students and teachers!

Warhol Inspired Cats

Second grade students learned about Pop Artist Andy Warhol and his colorful paintings of cats. They drew their own cats and included many details to tell a story about the setting for their cat. Their cat drawings were then painted using pop art inspired colors.

Hot or Cool Shoes

This lesson incorporated both contour line drawings as well as color theory as 5th grade students drew shoes from observation and then filled their background with many creative details to create a setting for their shoes. Students then used contrasting warm and cool colors as they completed their works of art using water colors.










Hooray for Fish Paintings

Kindergarten students heard the story Hooray for Fish by Lucy Cousins in art class and used a variety of lines, shapes and colors as they created their own delightful fish paintings.

Matisse Fish Bowls

First grade students studied the work of Henri Matisse and his still life painting title "The Goldfish" in art class. Students then use their knowledge of 3-D forms to draw a cylinder for a fish bowl and then added a variety of details and patterns to tell a story about the interior of their rooms that they created.
